Botanica Wichita

Off the Interstate, down the road, over a river, next to a park, lies the Wichita Gardens.  Statues standing guard, flowers blooming every where, fish swimming in the ponds, and a dragon running through the Chinese Gardens.

Bluebonnet Swamp

Located off of one of the busiest street in Baton Rouge, you will find Bluebonnet Swamp.  It was a nice morning for a walk.

Or, laying in the sun.

When visiting the swamp remember to:

  • Stay on the path – their are critters larking in the swamp.
  • Beware of touching plants – it could be poison ivy.
  • Wear insect repellant – because the unofficial bird of Louisiana in the mosquito.

Cohn Arboretum

The Cohn Arboretum in Baton Rouge, the official name “Laurens Henry Cohn, Sr. Memorial Plant Arboretum” is one of the most beautiful places in Baton Rouge.  In the middle it has a pond and surrounded by walking path and trees.  There is even a grapes being grown.  If they fix up the house with period pieces, this place would be historic.

The Baton Rouge Zoo

On Easter Sunday in 1970, the Baton Rouge Zoo first opened to the public. A lot of credit is due to Bill Black, a.k.a Buckskin Bill, who was a popular children’s TV host. He would end his program everyday saying “Baton Rouge needs a zoo.” He encourage children to collect pennies and donate them so the Zoo could purchase an elephant. The children would line up outside the studio to donate the pennies they collected. The campaign was so successful, the children collected enough money to buy two elephants. One of the elephants was named Penny.

There are currently no elephants at the zoo.  When one of the last two died, the other was ship off to another zoo so it would not be lonely.

DSCN8183

The zoo is located in Louisiana, so of course, there are alligators.

The trip to the zoo was worth it, just to get this picture.

During a recent shopping trip, I stopped in at Dillard’s. These are just a few of the purses that I did not buy.

Snowmageddon 2016

On February 1 and 2, 2016, the “Heartland of America” was hit with record snowfall for a 2 day period.  Grand Island, Nebraska was at the bulls eye of the storm.  It received 18.3 inches of snow with 45+ mph wind gust.  Here are a few pictures I took.

It is starting to snow.

3D Print – Holy Family Shrine

I’ve learned that I could take a .jpeg file and load it into the Cura software that came with the 3d printer (Ultimaker 2) and it would add depth to the picture.    I had the option of letting either the dark or light colors to have depth.

I selected one of my pictures that I took at the Holy Family Shrine.

I had to scale down the image to 4″ x 6″ in the Cura software because 1101.3 x 1468.5 mm (43.35 x 57.81 inches) was too big for the printer.

I believe the results were amazing.

The Choir vs. Bass Pro

My niece asked me to come listen to her sing for Santa at Bass Pro Shop in Denham Springs.  I recorded the choir singing some of their Christmas songs.  Here they are singing Jingle Bells.

DSCN6403

While I was waiting for Santa to arrive, here are some of the things I found at Bass Pro.

A few snowmen. What is Winter without snowmen.

DSCN6417

A reindeer in his cute boots.

DSCN6418

I’ve learned what Santa does while the elves are making toys. I bet you thought he was sleeping.

DSCN6419

And, I found out how those reindeer are actually keep in line.

Holy Family Shrine

The Holy Family Shrine is in Gretna, Nebraska, which is locate outside of Omaha.  During my trips to and from Omaha I saw this awesome building sitting up a on hill.  I immediately wanted to visit it.

Later, while looking for places to visit in Nebraska, I saw this building listed and learned its name and found its website: Holy Family Shrine.  After many months, with travel arrangement changing,  I finally made a trip to the Nebraska Crossing Outlet Mall and a visit to the Shrine was only five minutes away.

DSCN6339

There is a fountain in the gift shop with water trickling down.  A stream runs from the fountain, out the doors, down a path, and through the Shrine.

DSCN6297

The Shrine is located on a hill surrounded by fields.

DSCN6340DSCN6337

It was beautiful. Even on the cold, cloudy, gray day when I visited the Shrine.

Inside the Shrine wasn’t fancy. But, who needs fancy when you have such a magnificent view.
